Companies have invested huge amounts of money in their
structured data, using technology such data mining, business
intelligence and OLAP tools to extract value from the data
stored in relational databases, which are in themselves
substantial investments.
But they have spent very little – in relative or
absolute terms – on getting similar value from their
unstructured data, which is widely acknowledged to be
substantially larger in terms of volume and worth.
Most estimates put the ratio at 80/20 in favor of
unstructured data.
